Terminating Employment

Fewer than 5 years of credited service

If you are a Class T-C or Class T-D member:

If you terminate employment with fewer than five years of credited service, the only benefit available to you is a refund of your contributions and interest.  If you are age 62 or older at termination and have at least one year of credited service, you may be eligible to receive a retirement benefit.  Click here for more details.

To withdraw your contributions and interest, you must complete an Application for Refund.  Your refund cannot be processed without notification from your employer that you are no longer working for them.  You must terminate employment with all Pennsylvania public school employers in order to qualify for a refund. To request the application to receive a refund of your account, please contact PSERS directly at 1.888.773.7748.

Fewer than 10 years of credited service

Vesting

If you are a Class T-C or Class T-D member:

If you termination date is on or after July 1, 2001, and you have five or more years of service, you also have the option of vesting your account (deferring retirement).  Vesting defers receipt of your contributions, interest, and monthly benefit until a later date. Vesting your account can eliminate penalties of an early retirement.

If you are a Class T-E or Class T-F member:

If you have 10 or more years of service you also have the option of vesting your account (deferring retirement).  Vesting defers receipt of your contributions, interest, and monthly benefit until a later date. Vesting your account can eliminate penalties of an early retirement.

Members in All Classes:

You do not need to do anything to vest your account.  This automatically occurs when you reach the years of service required for a member within your membership class to vest.  You must contact PSERS when you are ready to begin the retirement process.  Click here for more information about retirement.

If you elect to vest, you would reach superannuated (full) retirement status at age 62 as a Class T-C or T-D member or age 65 as a Class T-E or T-F member.  Leaving your funds in PSERS past superannuation age would not result in a high monthly benefit.  You, however, should apply to receive vested benefits within seven years of reaching superannuation.  Under the Pennsylvania retirement code, vestees who do not apply to receive a retirement benefit within seven years after reaching superannuation lose the monthly benefit.  You would only receive your accumulated contributions and interest.
